You may already have this information, but it bears repeating. Reedsy has compiled an article on the word counts for various forms of fiction. More than that, they explain how various word counts work in the publishing and agenting world. It’s worth checking out here.
In the meantime, here’s the basic information (but the rest of the article is well worth reading):
- Short story: under 7,500
- Novelette: between 7,500 and 17,500
- Novella: between 17,500 and 40,000
- Novel: over 40,000
According to Reedsy, and I’ve read this in other places, the “sweet spot” for a novel is 80,000 to 90,000 words. But you might be surprised at the big bestsellers they list that were much shorter.
For what it’s worth.
