Which genre do you write in? A poll follows. I haven’t totally settled down yet--here are mine:
Fantasy (satire) The Vampire Kitty-cat Chronicles
Mystery (coming of age) The Summer Boy
Science Fiction Hiding Magic
Science Fiction Gundown (free ebook editions)
Here are the top 10 most popular fiction genres from QueryTracker
- Young Adult
- Fantasy
- Literary Fiction
- Children’s
- Science Fiction
- Thrillers/Suspense
- Middle Grade
- Romance
- Historical
- Women’s Fiction
Perhaps it's no surprise that the list of the 10 genres most requested by literary agents is exactly the same.
One nit-pick: Young Adult and Middle Grade aren’t actually genres, they’re categories. What are the most popular genres in those categories?
Which genres make the most money? A 2014 article says the top five are:
- Romance/Erotica
- Crime/Mystery
- Religious/Inspirational
- Science Fiction and Fantasy
- Horror
Interesting to me that neither Religious/Inspirational or Horror appear in the top 10 list.
Share what you write—this poll allows more you to select more than one genre.
For what it’s worth.
