    Ouch. The 'as' phrase is one of my vices, along with overuse of gerunds. Great reminder!

    I never considered this before, nor paid attention to it. I'm going to have to go through and see if I do this in my writing.

    Like most words, as has more than one meaning. Websters says that number four is "Because; since; it being the case that." Most of your examples are perfectly proper, when considering the because sense of as.

    Webster's number three definition is "While; during or at the same time that; when; as, he trembled as he spoke." Your suggested replacement, when, is in fact one of the meanings of the word. The while/during/when sense of as shows a relation in time, which is not necessarily simultaneous. This sense covers your examples that aren't using the because sense.

    For example, "Lee jokes as he swigs from his bottle." Substitute while for as. It's two separate things that Lee is doing (joking, swigging) together by alternation, rather than simultaneously.
